Massage is one of the oldest and most powerful forms of healing. Hawaiian Lomi Lomi is one of the most profound forms of massage. So what makes it so special, what is it, and how does it differ from other massage?
Lomi Lomi is a unique healing massage derived from the ancient Polynesions and more specifically the master healers of Hawaii. To understand the depth of Lomi, it helps to have an understanding of the Hawaiian philosophy of healing.
People generally believe that our memories, beliefs, patterns and behaviors that cause our bodies to be impared, are stored in our heads, our brains. Hawaiian healers believe that these conditions are stored in every cell of the body and as such, can block the energy flow that provides fundamental balance in every individual. Lomi Lomi helps release these blockages while at the same time giving the energy new direction, or balance.
So what happens during a Lomi Lomi massage? A Lomi Lomi usually commeces with a stillness beween the practitioner and client, often times with breathing instructions being conveyed. The practitioner then works very intuitively with the client. In this respect there is no set format or sequence for the massage and no two massages will ever be identical.
The massage is given in fluid, rhythmic motion using the forearms as well as the hands. Another feature is that different parts of the body may be massaged at the same time, for example one arm or hand mat be working on a shoulder and the other hand may be working on the opposite hip. This assists the recipient in totally relaxing as it is very difficult for the brain to focus on two different areas at once. Gentle stretching of the joints might also be included as the practitioner sees fit.
Another major difference from other massages is that the person lays directly on the vinyl of the table and not on a sheet, this aids in simultaneous over and under strokes. Also, draping will be accomplished using a light cover versus a sheet and blanket. These two differences makes it a lot easier to perform the underbody and full body strokes without interrupting the flow of the massage. Of course the heat of the treatment room will be adjusted for client comfort.
If you would like to experience a massage that goes beyond bodywork, let me leave you with this thought. The Hawaiians believe that the healing process includes tolerance, forgiveness, acceptance, non judgment, appreciation, compassion, respect and so much more....these are the very foundation of a Lomi Lomi massage.
